Andy Warhol is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Warhol came to be known as the central figure in the ‘pop art’ movement. Instead of producing single copies of elaborate works of art as traditionally done in the art world, Warhol produced multiple versions and copies of everyday items, thus giving rise to ‘pop art’.

Besides painting and illustrating, Warhol also experimented in many other media forms. He directed avant-garde films, wrote several books, produced the Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia art show and financed the highly influential The Velvet Underground and Nico album. This was the first album put out by the seminal band The Velvet Underground and its leader Lou Reed.

Warhol’s most famous artwork examples incude Campbell’s Soup Cans, Cats and portraits of iconic people like Elvis Presley, Chairman Mao Zedong and Marilyn Monroe.

Marilyn Monroe was a legendary Hollywood actress, famous for her sexy image, screen presence and comedic performances. Prior to her tragically early death (at the age of 36 in 1962), Monroe starred in several all time classic movies, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot and The Misfits.

As was his custom at certain stages of his career, Warhol’s portrait of Monroe silkscreen prints outrageous colours over the top of a realistic black and white image. The colours are used to differentiate Monroe’s facial features, including her trademark mole and flowing hair.
